Welcome to my Substack!

If you’re looking for an unconventional perspective on popular topics, you’re in the right place. As a former representative in Congress, I’ll be discussing politics, of course, but many other things, too. Much of this is for my own catharsis, so I’ll be letting loose in ways I simply haven’t before.

I entered politics to take on the political establishment and defend the principles of liberty. In my dozen years as a state representative and congressman, I defied party leaders, introduced innovative legislation, forged unique coalitions, and cast far more lone no votes than any of my colleagues. My political independence made me a top target of both old parties, but I never bowed to the pressure.

Along the way, I learned a lot: about the dysfunction of Congress, the potency of tribalism, and the disconnect between perception and reality.

The least practical approaches are sold as sensible, while the most practical ones are denounced as absurd. Major problems are ignored or dismissed as irrelevant, while minor issues are hyped as paramount. Concentrated power is venerated in the name of “democracy,” while representative government is bypassed in pursuit of outcomes. Hypocrisy abounds and so does whataboutism.

Through it all, I’ve been encouraged to find so many people who still believe at their core in the principles that make human cooperation and progress possible, and I’m convinced that only by persuading others and building a better understanding of the value of liberty can we secure a free future.

My Substack explores all this and much more. I’ll name names and bring the receipts. I hope you’ll join the conversation.
